As a dyslexia specialist, teaching many children with dyslexia, I understand the importance of multisensory teaching. I have put together two books to help children learn common exception words. Common exception words are common words which may have unusual spelling patterns and this can make them difficult to remember. For a dyslexic learner they need to use a multisensory approach to make sure the words ‘stick’. Once these words have been learnt they form the foundations of reading and writing, giving the learner some fluency and confidence to read and write on their own.

The first book is called ‘First Common Exception Words’ which include the Reception and Year 1 word lists. The second book is called ‘More Common Exception Words’ and include all of the words from the Year 2 word lists. The pages become a fun routine that the child can then accomplish independently.

For each of the Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 word lists I have created a mind-map to help learn these words. On the other side of the page the larger word is to be used with a range of sensory techniques. At the start of the book it talks you through how best to use the pages and make sure that this knowledge sticks. These are techniques used by speech and language therapists and dyslexia specialists.
